Shyamkanu Mahanta to Remain in Jail as Supreme Court Defers Bail Plea in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Guwahati | October 5, 2026 Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case related to the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, will remain in custody for now after the Supreme Court deferred his bail hearing to the first week of November. Mahanta is currently lodged in Baksa jail. He had approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail plea earlier this year. During Monday's hearing, the Assam government informed the court that the trial is progressing, with 94 of 394 witnesses examined so far. Some key witnesses connected to the case are based in Singapore and are yet to be examined. The Supreme Court has stressed that the trial should proceed without unnecessary delay. The case dates back to Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore in September 2025 during a yacht outing. His death triggered an investigation in Assam, with several people facing allegations in connection with the circumstances surrounding his death. For now, Mahanta will continue to remain in jail while the legal proceedings move forward. The Supreme Court is expected to consider his bail plea again in November.
